Project Description

The 2003 Downtown District was put in place to combat problems of physical deterioration and economic underdevelopment in the seven block area, to make public improvements and create public facilities. Key elements of the plan include initiating simultaneous projects designed to revitalize the project area, secure certain public open space in critical areas, develop new mixed-use development projects, pursue development across all land-use sectors, and develop parking facilities.  The improvements also led to the construction of Purrington Plaza.  This new development improved the area and led to the retainage of about 52 jobs, and the creation of an additional 200 new jobs for Rexburg residents and BYU-I students.

Results

The major activities that have been carried out in the downtown district include the infrastructure improvement that led to the development of Purrington Plaza and a Walgreens in the downtown area.  This downtown development has led to the creation of approximately 97 new jobs.  The City is also in the process of undertaking a Downtown Revitalization Project and has partnered with the County and Urban Renewal Agency for eligibility and some infrastructure development.  Part of the downtown revitalization effort is to tear down an old unsafe structure and create a green space until the County determines a suitable use for the soon to be developable property.
